Live Free or Die Hard
For this blog I decided to talk about living freely or naturally without any technology. First of all I am more than capable of doing this because I grew up on a farm and understand what I have to do to provide for myself. As for not having any technology the biggest thing would be not having my cell phone to talk to my girlfriend, but heck she is dating a redneck like me so I can bring her along to the little olde cabin I plan on staying in. Technology has never really been my life so I really wouldn't have a problem leaving it behind. People may not understand that even ovens, showers, and toilets use electricity and are considered technology. That's right I would have to resort to buckets filled with water and showering outside most likely and cooking on a wood stove. I really wouldn't mind living without technology because we are too attached and need to experience the outdoors and natural beauty that surrounds us. As for food there is no problem there. I have been hunting all my life and am capable of supplying plenty of vension and fish. Gathering also is key to living in the outdoors and knowing what type of berries make you sick and which do not is great knowledge to have. It may be hard for people to leave technology behind but it really isn't that hard to live on your own and provide for yourself. Food, water and shelter is all you need and you would do just fine, learning as you go. Trust me if you had to figure a way to live you would learn fast. I have joked around to my conservative grandfather, that if I ever won the lottery I would buy a mountainous lot build a house and then mine the road so I'm secluded from everyone and do not have any drama in my life. I'm a conservative guy and don't like drama or politics and let's face it life today is all about both. Whether you are looking at the economy or the styles that people dress or act like I believe it all comes back to drama and politics. So I'm just gonna seclude myself from all of it and live free rather than die hard and unhappy worrying about the decision between purchasing a PS3 or Xbox to play during all my free time off the computer and cell phone.

It's true that we take great advantage of "technologies" in our lives that simply were not in existence in days past. We have it pretty easy in comparison...which is why I wonder how we might cope if suddenly we lost it all...
ReplyDeleteI liked how you brought up the point that even things like ovens and showers are considered technology because I have always thought about that too. Everything around us is some form of technology or made from a technological device. Even the simplest of things are connected to technology somehow. Sometimes we think of only our laptops or cell phones being considered technology but really it is everything around us today.
ReplyDeleteI like how you pointed out that even showers and ovens are technology. I used to go to a house in the mountains that my great grandparents owned, and we used to have to use showers with only a little amount of water that we had to pump ourselves from the well outside. I, like you, think I could live without technology if it wasn't for my girlfriend being so far away.
ReplyDeleteI think it's awesome that you know how to do some many "outdoorsy" things. I, unlike you, do not know how to hunt and how to clean the meat and so on. I know how to fish and that's about it. I think it is great that you are so self-efficient and that you have had the opportunity to learn about so much from living on a farm. I agree that even if you don't know how to provide for yourself, you would eventually figure it out. We do often look over technology; you made a good point pointing out that even stoves and showers ARE considered technology. If you really think about everything else that you use on a regular basis, most is made up of some technological component.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you'd have no promlem living in a secluded place for a year or even longer! That's awesome. For me, I think it's possible, but I wouldnt want to do it. If my family and friends could come along, I'd be fine. I don't really like being alone, only sometimes so it would be extremely difficult to do it for a whole year! Drame tends to come with technology. Who's dating who? or Who's friends with who? It isn't "official" now til its on Facebook. How pathetic is that? It's easy to believe that most people wouldn't know the first thing to do if they were secluded without technology. It'd be extremely difficult for many people, including me.
ReplyDeleteI definitely feel like you wouldn't have a problem with this. You've already told us you could do it and i believe in ya. Doing things outdoors really gets your mind off of school and is a really good stress reliever. Much better than playing video games and talking on the phone (sometimes).
ReplyDeleteI really think Facebook is getting ridiculous these days. I know it's what everyone does but when you have to go on Facebook to find out who is in a relationship or who is talking to who? That is just completely ridiculous to me. I just don't understand it but that's our generation these days.
