Blog #6

Today we are constantly being watched on cameras.  About every building you walk into that sells some sort of product has a camera.  Even some private houses have video cameras set up incase of a crime  may occur.  I believe that the reason we have cameras is to identify individuals who commit crimes.  In 1984 the reason they have cameras is the same thing, to keep people from going against the party.  They need to control the population in Oceania because the party is represented by the smallest amount of people.  I don't feel like the cameras set up today in society are for control as it is in 1984.  I feel it's just for safety and protection against criminals.  I don't mind cameras being set up in stores or in parking lots, but I do mind cameras being put in bathrooms.  A bathroom is a private place not a public place in my opinion.  If you are worried about crimes being committed you can put the camera outside the bathroom and see the suspect coming and going.  The only thing is with that you may not catch the crime on tape, but I would rather have privacy in the bathroom.  I couldn't live in Oceania and have to fear for my life everytime I do something against the Party.  Our society isn't that controling with our security cameras, but if it ever becomes like Oceania I will most likely be changing my opinion.  As of now I think these cameras as a good thing in our society and help accuse people committing crimes on tape.

  1. This is EXACTLY how I feel about cameras in today's society! I agree that they are solely for catching criminals and for the better of the society (in public places). They can help catch people stealing in stores, see crimes occur, and even catch hit and run accidents. I think cameras in public are acceptable... they are there to help us! However, when comparing to cameras in today's society and the telescreens in 1984, there is a clear boundary that has been crossed. I believe there should NEVER be cameras placed in a private home. People's houses are their own and what happens in them is their own business-- no one elses! I also agree with your viewpoint about cameras in bathrooms. This also over steps the boundary. I think they should be placed outside of bathrooms so you can see who enters and who exits. That way you could prove how long an individual was in the bathroom and what people were in the bathroom together at one time.

  2. I definitely wouldn't be able to live in a society such as Oceania. It would drive me crazy knowing that I could basically do nothing for fear of being caught by the thought police and then suddenly vanish because of it. I agree I think having cameras in public places such as stores and parking lots is a great thing because it really does protect a lot of people.

  3. Living in a society like Oceania would definitely not be the place for me either. I could not stand to be watched all the time. It is terrible that the people have a telescreen watching their every move every day. There would truly be no privacy and that is a bad thing.

  4. I wish I could say I totally agree that the only reason we have security cameras is to see people who commit crimes. Unfortunately, I do think that the government has other reasons for security cameras. I feel that corporations, and the government, want to be able to see what people are doing at all times, just so they can keep tabs on people and see what they are buying, using, etc.

  5. I feel as if cameras are a great way to stop criminals but it shouldn't be there to watch people that aren't. Yeah it's wrong to assume someone is a criminal but it's for the better of our country. It's needed but not as much as we say we do. I do agree with you i just wish everything in our country made sense.
